Company Background

Matritech is using its patented proteomics technology to develop diagnostics for the detection of a variety of cancers. The Company’s first two products, the NMP22® Test Kit and NMP22® BladderChek® Test, have been approved for both the monitoring and diagnosis of bladder cancer. The NMP22 products are based on Matritech’s proprietary nuclear matrix protein (NMP) technology, exclusively licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which correlates levels of NMPs in body fluids to the presence of cancer. The Company has discovered other proteins associated with bladder, cervical, breast, prostate and colon cancer and is, with its own research staff and through strategic alliances, in various stages of development currently targeted to each of these applications.

In the mid-1980s, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made discoveries relating to the use of nuclear matrix proteins for detecting cancer. In 1987, this technology was licensed exclusively to Matritech. In the early 1990s, Matritech’s scientists discovered that the NMP22 marker proteins were elevated in the urine of patients with bladder cancer. This discovery formed the basis for the NMP22 BladderChek Test and the NMP22 Test Kit. Matritech scientists have also identified other proteins that correlate with cervical, breast, prostate and colon cancer.
